Kim Kardashian’s Buttmoji Owns The App Store

It seems like 2015 was the year of the “emoji.” I mean, a damn emoji was the “word of the year.” This year is ending with a massive bang on the App Store thanks to Kim Kardashian and her…assets.
Fire up the App Store on your devices and here’s what you’ll see for the top paid app:

Screen Shot 2015-12-22 at 11.03.46 AM
The app, KIMOJI, costs $1.99. What do you get? Well, emojis having to do with Kim Kardashian, of course. Not bad for a keyboard app, eh?
screen322x572
It currently has 2 stars, so maybe people aren’t getting as much out of it as they thought. The initial popularity certainly spun up tons of interest though, as the App Store magically went down during the flurry of asscitement:

No, but it’s still a fun story.

Google, Tesla And Automated Car Startups: Are We Ready For The Next Big Shift ?

The whole of civilization and evolution of humankind can be summed up as simply getting from one place to another. An average American male spends 699 hours per year of their life driving. That is a total of 48,390 hours, if we consider 70 years as an average life, being on the road, stuck in traffic jams and generally being non-productive. Companies like Google and Tesla are keen to come up with a solution to this problem. Autonomous cars will not only save time but also save lives as nearly 1.37 million people fall victim to road accidents every year. However, as it often is with new technology, people are skeptical more so because their lives are literally at the hands of a computer. Despite, companies are betting on the future of self-driving cars and electric cars.

Traditional car manufacturers in the last few years have focussed heavily on safety and making cars more intelligent, so that the passengers inside are comparatively safer. New age cars are fitted with traction control, automated braking systems, and some of the newer Tesla models can even handle themselves without any human intervention on highways and easily navigable places. The near future promises to bring us fully autonomous cars courtesy efforts from companies like Google and Uber. But, the future for autonomous cars is not as simple as companies like Google are presenting automated cars, not as a personal vehicle, but as a node in the grid of an intelligent and connected transportation system. Where does this place the traditional car manufacturers? And are we even ready for such a sea change? With questions like these, a buzz in our minds, we delve deeper into the new and exciting world of automated cars!

SELF DRIVEN AND ELECTRIC CAR INDUSTRY WITNESSING A REVOLUTIONARY DEVELOPMENT

infographic-self-driving-cars
As the infographic above states, we are in the stage of passive autonomous driving. Heading into 2016, the industry has no clear leader. Google has been working on their cars from 2012 and rumours suggest that they’re ready to branch off the Google Cars Team from the experimental Google X Labs to a full blown company under the Alphabet umbrella. Back in September, Google hired John Krafcik, an auto-industry veteran, as the CEO of the cars project and till now the autonomous cars have logged nearly a million miles (1.6 million km) on open public roads.

Reports suggest that next year we will see Google release these cars in and around Austin, Texas and San Francisco in controlled environments like college campuses, military bases or corporate office parks. Google is looking to position itself as a viable alternative to Uber and Lyft by offering consumers the experience of driverless cars without the hassles of owning one.
Not to be undone, Uber, the startup that is now evaluated at close to $50 billion, is spending some of its investor money in coming up with a viable competitor to Google Cars. While the future of companies like Uber and Lyft hangs in the balance, the traditional automobile manufacturers are stepping up their game as well! Companies like Ford and GM motors are aggressively testing out their own version of automated driving as well. Some like Tesla have already beaten Google to the punch, although their automated cars still require humans to be at the helm should any sort of tricky situation arises. Morgan Stanley analyst, Adam Jonas predicts that Tesla can triple their revenue by 2029 if they follow Google’s footsteps and venture into the on-demand mobility market.

THE ONE MAN WONDER: CHALLENGING GOOGLE AND TESLA

While all the big companies have spent millions of dollars to get their cars on a road, one man by the name of George Hotz has built a car that can drive itself in his own backyard. The genius hacker has managed to turn his run of the mill Honda Acura into an autonomous vehicle. What’s even more impressive, is that Hotz plans to make these kits available for car manufacturers and even car owners at only $1000/unit.
Capture
Most of the current automakers that have implemented autonomous driving to an extent have used the Mobileye technology. Mobile eye has seen dramatic increases in their revenue with their last quarter racking up $71 million, a 104% increase YoY. However, Hotz believes they’re technologically inferior as he says
“They’re a company that’s behind the times, and they have not caught up.”
Hotz and his off the shelf solution may be the new entrant that will kick-start the growth of consumer grade autonomous cars. Being dependent on machine learning and end-to-end deep network algorithms, this implementation of autonomous learning can learn how a real human drive and is better at handling situations than a piece of software that is hard-coded for certain circumstances.

ARE WE READY FOR ROBOT DRIVERS?

driverless_cars_survey
Overall, if we have a look at the data, in the three developed countries, there seems to be a universally positive opinion towards driverless cars. There is still a vast number of skeptics who think that letting a computer make such split-second life and death decisions is letting the AI run a little too far. However, with that being said, what most drivers are worried about is the laws and legislatures as nearly 50% across all 3 markets consider that they will still have to pay when their Automated vehicle is involved in a crash!
Some companies are thus taking matters into their own hands and companies like Volvo with their liability promise is reassuring consumers and easing their way into this new market. While the pros of such a society would be manifold, we can divide them into a few main categories.

GAIN IN PRODUCTIVITY

productivity
Harping back to the point we made at the beginning of this article, driving is a time-consuming chore, one we could do very well without! If we look at the data for the US alone, we see that the gains in productivity for a year can be to the tune of $422 billion.

REDUCTION IN COSTS

burns-ann-arbor4
One of the major hassles of owning a car comes from the fact that whenever something unforeseen happens to it, the owner has to shell out a ton of money. In the future, however, Google and Uber will see for us, no one owns a vehicle. This reduces traffic jams and precious biofuel. Also, having the car back to a central hub at the end of the day could mean that companies could perform daily checks for software updates and safety measures which can never be done with personal vehicles. The reduction in the cost of travel/miles comes down from $0.75 to $0.15 a whopping 80% decrease.

BETTER FOR THE ENVIRONMENT AND QUALITY OF LIFE

driverless-car-public-transport
Paraphrasing Enrique Penalosa, former Mayor of Bogotá, Colombia
A developed country is not a place where the poor have cars. It’s where the rich use public transport
With automated cars running the roads and private ownerships of cars being reduced to a minority, we can expect drastically lower fuel consumptions. With lesser number of trips required, traffic jams will be a thing of the past as, and the rate of accidents will decrease as well.

MANY STILL REMAIN SKEPTIC

1-consumers-are-skeptical-about-driverless-cars
As this infographic above clearly demonstrates, our society as a whole is still not ready for human less cars. With more than 76%  saying they would never trust a robot to take care of their children. In fact, we see some of the earliest legislature and legal hurdles that these cars and their companies will have to face are already coming up. Driverless cars have been all but banned by the California DMV, and severe limitations are placed on cars with some degree of automation as to where and how they can use their autonomous capabilities. We can only hope that with positive campaigns from companies like Google and Tesla a change in public opinion comes around!

FINAL THOUGHTS

1a_article_1b
With a huge number of potential industries benefitting from the move to autonomous cars, one can say that driverless cars are all but an eventuality. As the cost of living and fuel prices increase around the world, the expenses of owning a car and the insurance and related hassles will outweigh the convenience. The success of companies like Uber and Lyft have proven that there is a growing shift in the mindset of daily commuters and with the advent of robotised cars, this trend will continue to grow in momentum.

With help from the Government regarding laws and legislatures as promised by US Secretary of Transportation, the dream of driverless cars all over the world by 2025 seems to be getting more and more in touch with reality. This is certainly an exciting space to look forward to as the duel between consumer electronic companies like Google and traditional car manufacturers for the top spot in autonomous cars heats up in the near future!

Reliance Jio procuring smartphones from ZTE for Lyf handset brand: Credit Suisse

Chinese handset maker ZTE is currently making VoLTE-ready 4G smartphones for Reliance Jio’s Lyf handset brand, a report by Credit Suisse revealed. The report also said that all the ZTE devices made for Jio’s Lyf brand are powered by Qualcomm chipsets. Currently, only Qualcomm chipsets support VoLTE functionality.
Rjio-delhi2

Reliance Jio Infocomm is the only pan-Indian 4G operator, and it has recently started beta-testing 4G network by issuing connections to employees and their families. There are total four smartphones aptly named- LYF Water 1, LYF Water 2, LYF Water 3 and LYF Earth 1 are released by Lyf brand. Currently, these handsets are rolled out to its employees and would soon be available to the customers.

7 Ways to Block a Phone Number!

There are times when you might feel the need to block a phone number and avoid those unwanted calls, be it the pesky telemarketers or an ex-boyfriend/girlfriend who just doesn’t accept that it’s all OVER! The reasons to block a phone number are numerous, but the solutions to do so are numbered and few. Depending upon your cell phone model and your carrier, there might be a solution.

How to Block Phone Number and Avoid Unwanted Calls

There are different ways to handle unwanted calls and block a phone number. All methods won’t work for all, so you would need to carefully choose an option which will work for you.

“Do not call” Registry

This option is best suited if you are trying to block a telemarketer. If you are in US, you can register with the National Do not call registry or call 1-888-382-1222 from the number you wish to block to keep the telemarketers at bay. It is illegal for telemarketers to call you after you have been added to this list. If you are in India, there is a similar National Do not call registry where you can register your phone number.

Carrier Help

Taking the help of your carrier is the most appropriate option to block any phone number.
  • AT&T : If you are a customer of AT&T wireless, you can make use of a premium service called “Parental Controls” which will allow you to limit who can call you or text you by blocking or allowing certain numbers. It costs just $4.99 per month.
  • Verizon : Go to VerizonWireless and log into your account. And then go to “My Services” and choose the SPAm control. Here you can add up to 5 phone numbers that you do not want to contact you or even text you.
  • Sprint & T-Mobile : Currently, Sprint and T-Mobile doesn’t provide an easy way to block unwanted callers, though there is a work-around for Sprint users. You can block all numbers which are not in your phone contacts. For this, go to Settings –> Security –> Others [password will be last 4 digits of your phone number] –> Call settings. Here you will find that option.

Handset Specific Options

Off late, the handset manufacturers have started providing features to help you block phone numbers. Look out for in-built or downloadable option to limit incoming calls.
  • Nokia : The Nokia symbian phone users can download apps like Blacklist which can block specific phone numbers from making a call.
  • Samsung : If you have a Samsung phone, you have the ability to send an incoming call directly to voicemail, without it even ringing on your device. Look for the “block list” feature on your device
  • Sony-Ericsson : SE mobile phones have built-in blocking functions, simply go to Settings > Calls > Manage Calls > Accept Calls > Only from list, press ‘Edit’ to choose the numbers.
  • T-mobile G1 : Similar to Samsung phones, G1 also uses a feature available in the contact list to block specific numbers.
  • Blackberry : If you have a Blackberry, you can use a program called Efficient Call Blockerfrom BerryWAV. This program will block numbers that you specify and let you make the other party hear messages like your number is disconnected or no longer in service. Another such app is CallsBlocker.

  • iPhone : Not a straight-forward option available for iPhones if you are not using iOS 7. Check the Update below if you are on iOS 7. In case you have a jailbroken iPhone, there are couple of neat apps which will help you – MCleaner & iBlacklist.
Update: If you are on iOS 7, you can block anyone with a click on your iPhone. This will block the person from calling, texting and FaceTiming you. To do that, go into your contacts, select someone, and scroll down to hit “Block.”

Activate Silent mode for specific contacts

There are times when a pesky friend or a relative continuously call you and you’re not comfortable telling them to cut it out. Easy way to handle such situations is to activate silent mode only for such contacts. The trick is to have a silent ringtone assigned to such contacts. So, each time they call you, you don’t really get to hear it, and they should eventually get tired of calling you.
Download this blank mp3 ringtone (or this one). If you are using Android or Symbian smartphones, transfer the file onto your SD card and set this as the ringtone for that pesky contact. Additionally you can create a new profile and assign the silent ringtone as the default one for everyone in that profile. iOS users can use this guide to upload ringtone to iPhone.

YouMail

youmail-block-phone
If your phone is compatible with free services like YouMail, you can block unwanted voicemail messages. The callers you block get the designated greeting you choose and are never given the option of leaving a voicemail message! They have dedicated apps for Blackberry, Android and iPhone which are all available for free.

TrapCall

trapcall-block-phone
TrapCall is a premium service with numerous features like blocking unwanted callers, number unmasking, recording calls etc. TrapCall currently supports AT&T, T-mobile, Verizon and Sprint.

Call Customer Care!

Calling customer care for help in blocking a specific phone number is one of the most suggested solutions. Alas! it doesn’t work most of the times. But some carriers do let you block a phone number but only after verifying the facts and asking few security questions.

Change your number

I know this is a ridiculous solution, but in case none of the above tricks work, this is the only available option.

Apple devices are top Black Friday sellers at Target

Apple products sold well at Target during Black Friday

Apple products sold well at Target during Black Friday

Target sold one Apple iPad every second during Thanksgiving. That includes sales made online and in brick and mortar Target stores. In fact, Apple products did quite well during Black Friday at the discount retailer. Inside the physical stores, Apple Watch was a strong seller. Both of those products were on Target's Top Ten Best Selling items list for its holiday sales.

Also selling well during the last two days at Target was another product now associated with Apple. The Beats Solo 2 headphone was rung up quite often by Target cashiers. Last year, Apple purchased Beats Audio for $3 billion, making it the company's largest acquisition ever. Apple will shut down streaming music provider Beats Music at the end of this month, leaving the headphones as the only part of the purchase that Apple is keeping alive.

Target offered consumers a $100 gift card with the purchase of an Apple Watch. The store carried Apple Watch Sport models starting from $349, and Apple Watch timepieces priced up to $649. Those purchasing the Apple iPad Air 2 Wi-Fi  during the sale (16GB priced at $499, 64GB priced at $599 and 128GB priced at $699) received a $150 Target gift card. Buyers of the Apple iPad Air Wi-Fi ($399 for 16GB, $449 for 32GB and $599 for 64GB) received a $100 Target gift card, as did those who bought the Apple iPad mini 4 ($499 for the 64GB Wi-Fi model, $599 for the 128GB Wi-Fi version, and $629 for the 64GB Wi-Fi+ Cellular tablet).

The Beats Solo 2 headphones are normally priced at $199.99. Target had them on sale for Black Friday at $96.99.

Why are telcos resorting to offering insurance cover?

After Telenor, Sistema Shyam Teleservices (SSTL), which runs under the brand MTS, is all set to provide insurance cover to its data subscribers.
trai-mobile
For the first time, with Telenor, a telecom operator has started offering life insurance to its new and existing customers, with covers from Rs 5,000 to Rs 50,000. SSTL has tied up with Oriental Insurance company to provide Rs 1 lakh accidental insurance cover to its new data subscribers.

So, the question is what’s exactly pushing some of the telcos to walk that extra mile or in another sense to dilute their DNA?

Industry experts believe that with the coming of over-the-top (OTTs) players, it is basically the fear of becoming irrelevant which is actually pushing telcos to look out for different revenue generating models.
It should be recollected here that few months back, the Reserve Bank of India had cleared payment bank licenses for some of the telecom operators, including Airtel, Vodafone and Idea.
All these indicate that as the telcos gear up for their data journey and face insurmountable threats from the OTTs it has become imperative for them to look out and chalk out some other strategies for their businesses.
Sanchit Vir Gogia, Chief Analyst and Group CEO, Greyhound Research, says, “As revenue generation areas are growing lesser for Indian telcos, there is a pressure to manage scalability. OTT services/apps such as WhatsApp/Skype are furthering shrinking revenue margins for Indian telcos, therefore there it is imperative to work on revenue generation models that are not limited to just voice and data services.”

The time is opportune as India witnesses the eCommerce/mCommerce wave – there is a paucity of secure payment channels and telcos must leverage this opportunity to create a secure transaction channels for the Indian masses, he adds.
Experts say that mobile operators, in this extremely competitive market, need to continuously explore ways in which they can not only expand customer base but also increase the so-called ‘stickiness’ of existing subscribers.
Assocham’s National Council on Telecommunications Chairman TV Ramachandran, however, says that “The branching of telcos into payment bank role or some insurance provider role is a very logical extension in their growth plans and not a dilution of their telecom interests.

Intex Aqua Trend Review

Intex has launched its second 4G enabled device Intex Aqua Trend in the market. The device is priced between Rs 9,400-9,700.
In the box:
Apart from the device and its battery, Intex packs screen guard, phone cover, charging cable & plug, & ear-phones.
IMG_20151018_234652

Overall looks:
The Aqua Trend has some solid looks when you check out the device from the front. However, the device feels very plastic-y in hands when you hold it thanks to its back cover. While you do get used to it in couple of hours of usage, the patterned plastic back cover does not really feel rich.

IMG_20151018_220240IMG_20151018_220304
Display and screen:
The device comes with 5 inch IPS display with a resolution of 720*1280 pixels. While the device display lacks in clarity, it makes it up in brightness. The screen, honestly, is just average. However, I am also using Huawei Honor 4X as my second device since last couple of days, the Aqua Trend offers much better display outdoors, thanks to its brightness level.
IMG_20151018_220328
Camera:
Aqua Trend sports a 13 Megapixel rear end camera with LED flash and a 5 Megapixel front-facing camera. The device manages to take decent pictures from its camera on the rear end. However, do not bother zooming in the picture, the camera lacks clarity. The 5 Megapixel front facing camera is definitely a surprise when you compare it with what other handsets in the similar range have to offer. If you’re a selfie person and want to go a device in this go for Intex Aqua Trend.
Intex Aqua Trend_20150917_125225
Battery:
While it is equipped with 3000mAh battery, the battery life is not that good. With exhaustive usage on (3G connection) of apps like Twitter, Facebook (which is battery hogger) the battery lasted for 10-10:30 hours and with media usage even less. For a device with 3000mAh battery, you expect the device to last at least for 12 hours with decent apps & calls usage. Aqua Trent was a downer in this respect.
That said, the device also takes a lot longer to charge.
Call quality:
Call quality is just average. However I faced issues whenever I had to make VOIP calls. The volume on VOIP calls is so low that it’s almost impossible to have a decent conversation.
The device also significantly heats up during the calls.
Customization:
It comes with Android 5.1 Lollipop with little to no customizations by Intex. The only customizations were in notification bar and app icons.
It, however, comes with tons of pre-installed apps such as Auto Call Record, BLE Manager, Intex Services, Intex Play, Myntra, Newshunt, MX Player, Quikr, Skype, Newshunt, among others. Some of these apps can be uninstalled to make space.
Performance:
Aqua Trent is equipped with a 1.3GHz quad-core MediaTek (MT6735) processor with 2GB of RAM and 16GB inbuilt storage. It provides support for MicroSD card up to 32GB.
Most games rendered fairly well on the device, however there’s a slight lag when you play heavy games such as Amazing Spiderman 2. Videos played well as well on the device.
The device only slightly heats up when you continuously watch videos for over 2-3 hours.

Other features:
Intex Aqua Trend is packed with Accelerometer, proximity sensor, HotKnot (which can be used to transfer files between devices with similar tech by just touching their displays), Smart Wake, among others. There are few basic things that are missing such LED notification or backlit capacity touch buttons.
While Intex has managed to launch a decent device, I wouldn’t recommend the device at its current price. If Intex drops the price by Rs 2000-2500 the device could give tough competition to other smartphones in that range.
