Darth Vader’s Swim with Turtles

In these times of Star Wars frenzy, I have to make a revelation: no, I am not your father – you’re thankfully quite a number to read this so I’d have a tad too many children, although I’m a guy so technically I do have millions of little Sebastians available… but I digress as I barely started my post and the thought is slightly creepy too. So: I may not be your father, but I am… Darth Vader. Yep, that’s right, Darth Vader himself. Well if not himself, at least my heavy, slow breathing in a snorkelling tuba would clearly give me away or indicate some family connection, you have to give me that.

I felt at peace though, swimming in the straits between Gili Air and Lombok island in Indonesia – but my breathing initially clearly wasn’t. I was still breathing more rapidly than necessary. I knew I could finally relax but I had to consciously focus on slowing my breathing down.

Slowly inhaling air through my mouth – my nose was stuck in the snorkelling mask I was wearing – I started mentally counting up to the number six. I then held my breath for two seconds, before slowly expiring for another eight long seconds. The deep sound of air flowing through the tuba resonated in my ears, I sounded more and more like Darth Vader (or maybe like a whale, that would probably be a more accurate comparison), but thankfully my panting didn't disturb anyone nor the creature right below me.

I had suddenly remembered this breathing technique from a cute little squarish book full of simple quotes and relaxation methods. Too much of a rational mind, I had never been very keen about the topic of meditation, mindful introspection and other semi-Eastern voodoo-style stuff; Sam Harris'sWaking Up, a Guide to Spirituality Without Religion had however started to open up my mind a little, before I got my hands on that anthology of quotes and other simple, occasionally simplistic (but does it really matter if they work?), suggestions.

The beloved sea creature was calmly feeding itself, grazing algae and sea grass. I had been looking for turtles for a few days now. It's only when I finally saw one from close up that I realised how their shell camouflaged itself so easily with the brown-yellowish colour of the almost completely dead coral and of the sea grass it was feeding itself from.

Okay, let me admit how lame I was in detecting those turtles: they were more than one metre (three feet) in diameter... so yes, I really wasn't very good at detecting their subtle, if lethargic, movements. Most times they were submerged a mere metre below the surface, their rugged-edge carapace dangling and hitting rocks as the sea was ebbing and flowing. I couldn’t really mock them for being entirely focused on eating, not worrying about waves carrying them away: I was myself so intent on going into the sea that I blindly walked on the dead coral, fins on my feet, falling down like a clumsy clown and hurting myself against the sharp rocks every time a slightly bigger-than-expected wave would come crashing in.

I did eventually figure out a technique: walking backwards into the sea (no, it wasn’t quite moonwalking à la Michael Jackson but “almost”) and, just as importantly, taking the time to identify the areas where the coral had been blown up to let boats come alongside the shore. So if you ever travel to the eastern side of Gili Air, get in about a hundred metres north of Satu Tiga cottages where a few boats are anchored, let yourself drift with the currents, and get out at the little white flag that signals the blown-up channel right before the beach walls. Swim right at the frontier between the coral and the deeper sea where all the tropical fish of all colours and sizes – yes, including things that look like mini-sharks, yikes – love to swim around.

Temptation to swim with the turtle holding onto its hard carapace was high – I never watched The Little Mermaid (“it’s for girls”) so the closest analogy would be Aladdin and his flying carpet (no, I didn’t say the turtle was a carpet, argh!). So did I do it? I’m not sure I want to make you more jealous – or risk being demonised because turtles should be left undisturbed. Let’s just say I “accidentally” brushed against its large, paddle-like flippers. I followed the turtle as it swam away: it was quite a feeling to be able to swim at the same pace as the sea mammal, with no one and nothing else around except that beautiful uniform blue colour of the deep sea in the background. My heart leapt in small bursts of joy as one turtle led me to another, and yet another, and when their large beady eyes seemed to stare at me for a few seconds. Those days were good days for Sebastian.

At the surface of the sea, boats were whizzing around. Children were playing football on the beach – I would dismally lose later on but, to be fair and because I have to find a scapegoat, a player on my team attempted useless headers, literally planting his head into the sand without even touching the ball, what the heck – well, it’s not tomorrow that Indonesia will be on the world map of football (sorry). Tourists were tanning under the sun, sipping some watermelon or pineapple juice. The turtle couldn’t care less about all those mundane activities. It couldn’t be bothered by my presence either.

Once replete with its meal of dirt-coloured sea grass, the turtle broke the surface one last time to breathe one big gulp of air – and immediately dove vertically straight towards the floor of the deep blue sea. Sometimes I wish I could also disappear in some other-worldly pleasant-blue reality, away from feelings of responsibility, away from silly issues. Perhaps I should instead remind myself of that Buddhist analogy as regards to inner tranquillity: down there, far below the waves and the twirl of everyday life, it is always peaceful and quiet...

First Sex Date With GF or BF! Know These 6 Things Clearly!

Yes, I am talking about that very special date with your partner where you decide to take a plunge into another level of your relationship and create some very special moments together.
Whether it is an absolute love and emotion filled moment for you or the one where you feel you have simply given voice to your carnal urges (pun intended), you just need to keep certain things in mind before you sink in.
And here are the prime 6s you need to know clearly before your first sex date:
  1. Most Important: Relationship Qualms After The Date
Please, figure this one out unmistakably, before you climb the bed together. If at all, any of you is yet not ready to be committed,  please be vocal about it, and express clearly that, having a sex date will not be a binding sign for any of you. Clarify, that the relationship status remains as was, unless you both are ready to talk about it and move a level up, for many other reasons, and not only this one sex date. Having this clarity will save you from many dirty situations later.

  1. Make Sure Both Are Equally Up To It

If any of you is not up to the mark in the WANT section, chances are, you will spoil your first sex date. Having a half reluctant, half excited partner for your first time experience is not advisable. So make sure you both are on the same page and you both really want to do this.
  1. Protection Calls
You are ought to use protection (you must, come what may). Therefore, make necessary arrangements for it. If you are a boy, it is definitely your department and you can use this subject to build-up the excitement and make some research on the most pleasurable ones that will help you to make this experience memorable. If you are a girl, you can too, by all means, take the responsibility to buy a pack you would like him to use. You can sex-flirt with him playfully about his choices.
  1. Prepare Yourself Physically
Make sure you are prepared in every possible way, including your body. Unwanted hair, body odours and other such distractions must be eliminated before you meet for that delightful experience. If at all you guys are at a comfortable podium, you can ask each other about what your partner would like you wear for that special day, inside and outside.
  1. Keep Your Nerves On A Balanced Note
The pre-date preparations or the thoughts are going to excite you way too much. And it can result in too high expectations of your first experience. Do not do that to yourself. Get steady on a balanced note. Don’t expect too high. Don’t expect too less either. Do not discuss it too much with your partner before the D day. Just go with a calming flow, relax your nerves and let the whole course of heavenly exploration unfold naturally.
  1. Take It Slow And Watch Out For Reactions
And then, the D day comes! So, when you are in the act, and since it is your first time with that person, you need to take it at a steady pace, without rushing in. You have to keep your eyes and ears open to the reactions at your touches and moves. Try to understand what pleases your partner and what is taken a little unwillingly. Try not to repeat that. Be the caring and compassionate partner for this very special experience. It will take your relationship to another level of bonding and understanding altogether.

First sex date with a person is always remembered, whether you remain in the bond together or not. Make sure it is remembered on a positive note and you smile each time you think about it.
Go for it!

Pack goodness into your holidays

A few easy-to-do things that you can keep in your mind and follow for a goodness-filled break.
wellness-centers-holiday-Italy

For many of us, the day progresses something like this: get up and realise that we have just about enough time left to bathe and rush to office; reach office after a fierce battle with the crowd and traffic; work like there would be no tomorrow and come back home half dead. And, in the middle of all this, just mindlessly hog on to anything bearing the closest resemblance to food.

No. There is no concept of wellbeing left in our lives. Let alone doing proper exercise, we don’t even consider deep breathing for five minutes in the day. A few people who have shelled out money for gymming, do, at times, manage to run on the treadmill and think that they have done the needful. And yes, we don’t even have the time to think where we are headed towards, in terms of health and happiness.
So, this is the kind of life that we are leading and when we feel we are really bottled up with pressure and stress, we plan a holiday. Considering our sorry state of being, for once, we need to think differently about our holidays. How about a place which would pack both fun and wellness into itself? Ok, if you are not planning to go about it in full swing, how about getting these few important things right while you are on a break:
  1. Try and stay at a hotel or a guesthouse which either has a wellness or recreation centre or is close to one. Get up in the morning for a yoga session, swim or play a game of badminton. Believe me, it will make you feel happier than you can think.
  2. Walk as much as you can. Considering that you would plan a trip to a prettier, cleaner place than your resident town, a walk will be fun.
  3. Go for the region’s authentic cuisine, which generally has some goodness. No KFC or Mc Donald’s, or any other thing equally bad.

  4. It is completely okay if your idea of holidaying is to get drunk and make merry. Just balance it out with some physical activity, proper food and good conversations. How about renting a bicycle for a ride around the town, if possible?
  5. Stay happy. Don’t carry your laptop and work along with you. Enjoy the simple pleasures of life like looking at the star-studded night sky, gazing into the limitless expanse of the sea, smelling the flowers, or getting up in the morning to the sounds of the birds chirping. It will all do good.

6 Reasons to Drink Coffee Before Your Next Workout

Here are a few reasons it might be a good idea to scarf down a latte or a frothy cappuccino (or both!) before heading out on your next workout:
1. Caffeine can help you work out longer and harder: According to researchers in one British study, young men who drank a sugar-free beverage with caffeine an hour before working out were able to work out for a longer period of time and do more reps without getting exhausted than they did when they drank the same beverage without the caffeine.

2. Caffeine can improve your accuracy: Another recent study found that soccer players were able to dribble, head, and kick the ball with greater precision and agility after drinking caffeine. Caffeine not only made them more alert, it also improved their fine motor skills.
3. Caffeine can help you go faster: Sprinters, marathon runners, cyclists, rowers, swimmers, and tennis players can all get a speed boost from caffeine. And because it’s perfectly legal for competitive athletes to use, caffeine is, according to The New York Times, “the most popular drug in sports” today.
4. Caffeine can help you feel less tired: The subjects in that British study reported feeling less tired after workouts before which they had drunk caffeine, even if they had worked out for longer.

5. Caffeine can make you feel better about your workout: Those same British study subjects were also more excited about working out again after workouts before which they had consumed caffeine.
6. Caffeine can be delicious: Latte, cappuccino, espresso … mmmm!

An entire town is throwing an early 2016 Christmas for a terminally ill 7-year-old

Christmas is coming early this year for 7-year-old Evan Wellwood of St. George, Ontario.
There was a chance that Wellwood, who has been battling brain cancer for the past five years, might not make it to the winter holidays, his doctor told his family. His brain tumor had grown.
Evan's Early Christmas 4
So Evan's mom, Shelly Wellwood, decided to initiate an early celebration with her family on Oct. 24. But some of the family had an even bigger idea.

They took early Christmas to a new level with diligent flyering, a Facebook event and acrowdfunding campaign. As of Thursday afternoon, the "Early Christmas in St. George" Facebook page had 3,100 attendees; the GoFundMe campaign had raised close to $14,000.
On Saturday, Evan will be treated with a special dinner and a parade; homes and stores across St. George are decking out their properties with the spirit of Christmas for the 7-year-old.

Evan's Early Christmas

"There are no words to describe it," Shelly told CBC Radio's Metro Morning. "Evan has always had a lot of people supporting him and praying for him, but now that whole family behind [him] is just growing...

People are reaching out that don't live in St. George, it's just truly amazing. At the end of the day, it's all these people, their messages, the hope I'm getting from it — that's honestly what is keeping me going."

So sing a Christmas carol in Evan's honor on Saturday, even if you can't attend.

No India-Pakistan Cricket Series in December: Sources

NEW DELHI:  A proposed cricket series between India and Pakistan in December will not be held, sources in the Indian cricket board have said. The decision comes just a day after activists of the Shiv Sena tried to stop talks between Board chief Shashank Manohar and his Pakistani counterpart Shahryar Khan in Mumbai.
Here are the latest developments:
  1. Sources in the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) say that Pakistan has expressed concern about travelling to India for the World T20 Championship to be held in March next year.
  2. Yesterday, Sena activists barged into the BCCI office in Mumbai and threatened to prevent Pakistani umpire Aleem Dar from officiating in the fifth One-Day International (ODI) match between India and South Africa on Sunday.
  3. Mr Dar was later withdrawn from officiating in the remaining two matches of the ongoing series.

  4. Soon after, former Pakistani cricketers Wasim Akram and Shoaib Akhtar, too, decided against commentating in the fifth one-day match, which will take place in Mumbai. They have decided to return to Pakistan on Friday, a day after commentating in the fourth ODI in Chennai.
  5. Earlier on Monday morning, Shiv Sena activists broke into the office of the BCCI, just before the chiefs of the Indian and Pakistani cricket boards were to discuss the potential bilateral series between the two nations.
  6. Waving placards of "Shahryar Khan, Go Back", Sena activists crashed through the gates of the BBCI office in Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium. They entered BCCI chief Shashank Manohar's cabin and crowded around his desk, shouting slogans and warning him against meeting Shahryar Khan. At least 10 protesters were arrested, but were granted bail within hours.
  7. Sources said Mr Manohar drove to the Trident hotel, where Shahryar Khan is staying, and spoke to him. There will be no official meeting between the two cricket board chiefs until after October 25 - when the last ODI is played - say sources.
  8. The Indian and Pakistani cricket boards had signed a pact for six bilateral series between 2015 and 2023.

  9. The Shiv Sena, which rules Maharashtra in alliance with the BJP, says it will not allow any engagement with Pakistan as long as the country is involved in acts of terror.
  10. Leaders of the BJP disagreed publicly. "Mumbai should host an India-Pakistan match and if Pakistan cricketers come, the government should protect them," said state BJP chief Raosaheb Danve.

Every Mohalla Has A Sexy Aunty! Here, This Is The Story, of SEXY AUNTY!

Now, now girls, don’t be so jealous! Yes, you have been the centre of attraction for all the guys in your locality, but do you realise that in every locality, every Mohalla, there is one AUNTY out there to give you some stiff competition! Yeah, the guys are smirking and I can see that naughty smile on their face already. The one that lights up by remembering that aunty you had a crush on, right?

The sexy aunty who always wore dresses that were taboo for a family lady! Those sleeveless deep cut blouses, that extra layer of makeup, those beautiful, alluring, heavily kohled eyes that you always found attractive and excruciatingly inviting, and those also gave you the courage to talk to her on the pretext of finding some stupid information about the local doodhwala or some other crap! Remember those days? Yeah, now we are talking, aren’t we?

Well, this is really amusing as every guy will have a nostalgic story about such an aunty crush he had at a young age. It doesn’t mean that the aunty was seducing or inviting the young boys, but just that, boys found one lady special enough to consider her sexy instead of considering her as a mother figure (what crap???), like all the other women in the colony! And yes, this lady is always well-aware of her powers and makes some real good use of them too, well, at least boys tend to think like that!

How else would you explain aunty’s inviting her most ardent admirer (who would be blushing like a naveli dulhan, just because aunty is there), and make that timid lad sit in her lap! And that! I tell you, causes a lot of baby heart attacks you know! Every young boy of the mohalla wants to impress the aunty with his half-witted, half-developed brain and intelligence, which are usually found in their knees! To be able to hear her talk, smile, and laugh is like being in a paradise!

And if she showers her attention on you, even if for those pathetic 15 seconds, it is the best day of life! The only sad part in this entire story is, when aunty has to be with her husband! Jealousy shows its true pangs during that time and how badly they want to steal her away from the whole world and run away with her. Alas, that is not to be so and will never happen! (Let’s pray so) It is not to say that such sexy aunties are no longer there! One special lady who oozes her charms and sexuality without even trying, is every boy’s fantasy and still to be found quite easily.

All you need is the eye to notice her and then fall for her! Trust me guys, just enjoy the sight, and don’t do anything stupid or else the sexy aunty is quite capable of handling voyeurs like you! Do I have your attention or you are already looking at your fantasy? Hello, you there?? Well, just enjoy!

India favourites to lift ICC World T20 next year: Brian Lara

Its recent results have been mixed at best but the Indian cricket team will be among the strongest contenders when the country hosts next year’s World Twenty20 Championships, feels West Indian batting legend Brian Lara. India are currently engaged in a home series against South Africa and have lost the three-match T20 series.

“I think the Indian team playing at home is very dangerous team. And they proved that during (by winning) the World Cup in 2011 in India under (Mahendra Singh) Dhoni. They have got very exciting players and versatile,” Lara told reporters on the sidelines of an event here.

“I expect them to be favourites in the tournament (Twenty20 World Cup). I know home pressure is always there. I think the guys have grown a lot and I believe they have got a very good chance in the World Cup,” he said. On to the West Indies and Lara was asked if he has ever given a thought to playing the mentor’s role for the current side.

“If I was to get involved mentoring or coaching the West Indies team I don’t think there is going to be any big difference. I think our problem is very deep-rooted. Our infrastructure is pretty average and administratively we are not doing a good job. I don’t believe any one person can create any magic at the top level and see different performances,” he said. “I still believe that West Indies players are some of the most talented players in the world and especially the teenagers coming in.

What we tend to do in West Indies is that we take very good talent and make it into mediocre talent. You need a good administrative board to work in harmony with you,” Lara added. “I would love to make a difference but I feel it has got to be from ground up. Hopefully sometimes in the near future we will be able to do that.” Reacting to a query on whether he retired too early in his career, Lara said, “I may have a couple of records but I really didn’t go there to bat for records.

Scoring 12,000 runs was not important…I felt it was the right time to leave. I still believe that I enjoyed playing with the teams I played with.” Lara said he enjoys being in India. “Even during my cricket days, India is a place where I really loved coming to. I love the Indian people for the passion they carry through their life every single day.

Some of my very special friends Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman, Rahul Dravid, M S Dhoni and Virat Kohli…these are wonderful examples of Indians with great passion.”

Period Tracker App Clue Gets $7M To Build A Platform For Female Health

Berlin-based Clue, which makes a period tracker app designed to let women keep tabs on their monthly cycles and help predict their fertile window, has closed a $7 million Series A round, with investment from New York’s Union Square Ventures and London-based Series A fund Mosaic Ventures. The new round brings Clue’s total raised to-date to $10 million.
Clue launched its app in 2013, and says it now has more than two million active users on Android and iOS in over 180 countries. It’s currently available in 10 languages.
As well as tracking periods, Clue users can also choose to keep tabs on other hormonal changes taking place during their monthly cycle, such as low or high sex drive or PMT related symptoms such as low energy levels or insomnia. The app also lets users record when they had sex — useful data to correlate with your fertility window if you’re trying to get pregnant.
While there are a lot of period tracker apps in the market, co-founder Ida Tin says Clue has a more ambitious aim than most — and talks in terms of building a “platform for female health”.
“What we want to do is basically bringing this whole amazing field of female health into the whole age of data,” she tells TechCrunch. “Seeing how we can integrate all kinds of data streams from various sensors and so on and bring this all together and give women a really powerful way to understand what’s going on in their bodies.”
In a blog post announcing the new financing, Clue says it will be using the new funding to fuel growth by expanding its feature set, hiring more staff and developing new markets.

Fleshing out Clue’s plans, Tin added: “The main thing we want to work on is simply deepening the insights that women can get from the data. So getting even better at working with the data we have to make predictions more accurate. And also making notifications more advanced and more contextual.”
The accuracy of Clue’s predictions will vary depending on the user’s cycle — so women with very regular monthly cycles will likely get more accurate fertility predictions than those with irregular cycles. Providing users with a sense of how accurate the app’s predictions are for their particular cycle is also on the roadmap, says Tan.
“These are some of the things we can now start exploring now because now we really have a big data set, and we can also start doing our own clinical research in it,” she says. “For instance the app will be able to say it looks like your cycle looks to be falling into this particular pattern — so for this particular pattern these and these and these things might be relevant to track — or your accuracy will be so and so because you fall into this category. So we can say for you specifically your accuracy is probably within this range.”
Clue has also been approached by multiple universities interested in working with its data on studies around female reproductive health issues. Tan says it’s working with several at this stage, including Stanford, Columbia in New York, the University of Utah and Washington University. (During the on-boarding process Clue users are also asked whether they want to opt in to being contacted to participate in specific research studies.) The opportunities for research are clear.
“Most women still don’t really know what’s going on with their reproductive health and that’s a huge opportunity because it’s an area where very big life decisions are made, and there’s a lot of emotions around it, and it’s impacting our health in many, many ways and it’s impacting our everyday life in many ways, and our relationships as well. So it’s not a ‘nice to have’; it’s a ‘need to have’ kind of area. And there are no players that have really managed to solve this in a really fulfilling way. And that’s what we’re trying to do,” adds Tan.
“One thing we are already looking at is bleeding patterns in relation to IUDs [intrauterine contraceptive devices]. And then there are things people are curious about — like do you bleed together with other women in the same cycles, or can you time trying for a boy or girl if you’re trying to get pregnant. So these more kind of ‘lifestyle’ type questions, which I think we can conduct some real science around. But these are just kind of the ‘light end’ — it’s all the way from these kinds of things to more medical [questions like] do people who experience heavy PMS do they also experience heavy bleeding, for instance? What kind of correlations do we find?”
Has it been easy to raise funding with a pitch to build a heath-focused platform that has potential relevance to the lives of some 50 per cent of humans on the planet? “No it has not been easy,” says Tan. “I do think that this field of female health and reproductive health is exploding, and I think we are going to see so many cool products and services in this field, and they are going to be funded, but I still think that could be accelerated massively.
“I still think there’s lots of investors who will say that it’s interesting, but they don’t write the check…”

In what is perhaps something of a related ‘penny-drop’ moment, Apple corrected a glaring female health oversight in its own Health app this summer by finally adding period tracking.
“We need more female partners of course,” adds Tan, on the investment point, after I bring up the gender imbalance in the VC firms fueling the tech industry.
Markets wise, Tan says Clue’s main focus at this stage remains Europe and the U.S. (which is currently it’s biggest market), with LatAm and Japan also “quite interesting” at this stage. It’s also looking at India with a view to figuring out whether there’s an opportunity to do something from “more of an education/global good” point of view, she adds.

Pietersen accepts Ashes win vindicates decision

A month after the Ashes urn was regained, Kevin Pietersen accepted that England's triumph over Australia shows Andrew Strauss was right not to recall him. Strauss, England's director of cricket, ended the big-hitting batsman's hopes of an international comeback in May over a "massive trust issue" which threatened team harmony.

"He had a decision to make, he made his decision and it's turned out absolutely fine: England won the Ashes," Pietersen said. "At the time I would have said 'Ridiculous, nonsense.' I might have said something stronger to him. "But look, England have won the Ashes and I'm not a negative person. I am so positive. I am buzzing England have done what they have done."

After raging in May about being denied a return to the England team, having being dropped following the 2013-14 Ashes whitewash in Australia, the maverick player has now mellowed. With Strauss's decision appearing to be vindicated, England showed it can cope without its all-time leading run-scorer across all formats with the 3-2 series win over Australia.

"Absolutely (leaving him out) seems to be the right decision at the moment and good luck to (Strauss)," Pietersen said at a Sport Industry Group breakfast in London. "It is what it is. I can't go in there and change things. I think he has done OK.
"Some of the stuff he has done with the England team and getting past players into the dressing room is brilliant because I think there is so much knowledge we missed out on for the last three or four years of my career where we could have had that input from outside the dressing room."
The South African-born player recognizes his international career is probably over and he is instead focused on Twenty20. He will return home to play for the Durban-based Dolphins next month for up to five games before a stint in the inaugural Pakistan Premier League, which starts in February in the United Arab Emirates.
When asked whether he's passionate about playing in the lucrative Twenty20 format, Pietersen responded with a smile: "I have to be. I can't be with test cricket." Pietersen, though, still sees the five-day game as the pinnacle of cricket and a format that must be both protected and enhanced. "It is an amazing part of what we do and I think it's the best part of what we do — it's the thing I miss most about the game," Pietersen said. "I think test cricketers need to be paid more."

"Test cricketers need to know they are getting looked after a lot more so that they don't think, 'I'm not really making it here in the test arena, I can flip over and play T20 cricket.'"
The shorter format is where the 35-year-old Pietersen appears set to set out his career, with the prospect on an England return highly unlikely. "As soon as I stop love my batting and practicing my batting then I will stop," he said.

"As course I'd love to play test cricket because test cricket is where you get tested. "But if that can't happen I will keep plying my trade wherever I can over the next few years."

SA are top side but we won't take any backward step: Ravi Shastri

Indian Team Director Ravi Shastri on Friday said that South Africa are still a formidable side despite the retirement of some big players recently but his side will continue their aggressive brand of cricket in the upcoming series beginning on October 2.

"It is like asking me about Indian team without (Sachin) Tendulkar, VVS Laxman, Anil Kumble - players will come and go, but you got to respect the fact that SA are world number one side," Shastri said at a press conference when asked about the visiting side who are coming without the likes of retired Jacques Kallis.

"South Africa are a stiff opposition. They play well in overseas conditions better than any other side in world cricket. They travelled better than any other team and records will show that. And so we what we are up against. The respect is there but we will not take any backward steps," he told reporters at the National Cricket Academy where Indian team is holding a camp.
South Africa are coming to India for a more than two-month long tour which begins with a limited overs series.

India and South Africa begin the series with a Twenty20 International at Dharamsala on October 2.
The former India all-rounder brushed aside any talk of Mahendra Singh's possible rustiness to lead the side against South Africa in the limited over matches. India last played an ODI in June in Bangladesh and Dhoni -- who has retired from Test, led the side.

"No problem at all. You are talking about a season campaigner, one of the legends, one of the all-time greats in world cricket and not only of Indian cricket, you know I am saying as a captain. He (Dhoni) takes over a job he has been doing and so it is nothing new," Shastri said.
"Everything fits into place automatically. For the team there is no difference, they played under him in the World Cup. The last time they played an ODI, they played under MS in Bangladesh. What is the difference, they are playing under a champion. What else do you want!," he said.
Asked it's high time that Dhoni bats up the order, Shastri said the captain himself will take a call on the day.

He said it's time for him to enjoy the game because he had been doing "dirty work" for years.

"Don't you think it is about time? He has done the dirty work for donkey's years. Give him a chance to enjoy himself.

You are talking of probably the greatest ODI captains and players. Don't worry about MS he will decide on the day whether to bat up the order," he said.

Shastri said that no batsman in the Indian team was in the comfort zone and they should be prepared to bat in any position.

"Nobody is in a comfort zone. As a batsman in the top order you should be prepared to bat anywhere as the team demands. Now these were unforeseen circumstances, otherwise they would not have to do it... like we had to face when Murali Vijay and Shikhar Dhawan both were injured," said Shastri.

The unavailability of Dhawan and Vijay in the recent Test series in Sri Lanka prompted the team management to send Cheteshwar Pujara to open the innings and he lapped up the opportunity by scoring a superb hundred in Third Test.

Shastri also made it clear that the five bowler theory adopted in Test by Virat Kohli was not a permanent strategy and team combination will depend on the playing conditions and the rivals.

"No, it (five bowler theory) is not a permanent strategy.

You have to respect the conditions. In this game of cricket you cannot go in and say that I am going to go with this team.

It will backfire on you if the conditions are totally different," he said.

"So, you might need six batsmen, you might need four and a half bowlers, you might need just a bowler to do the job to give the main bowlers a rest. You have to play according to the conditions and play to the opposition. It is important to study the opposition you are up against and then decide what should be the best combination of your team," he added.

Replying to a query, Shastri said the most successful series for him during his tenure so far was the tour of Australia where, he said, players learnt hard lessons which have been put into practice by the young Indian side passionate about cricket and craving for consistency.
"For me, the most successful tour was that of Australia.

I keep saying this, the result was 2-0 down. Then we had a great World Cup, but lessons learnt in that tour was hard lessons. Those lessons have been put into practice, which I am really heartened by because it's a young team, the players are passionate, they want to learn. They don't want to rest on their laurels and they want to be consistent," he said.

Shastri said he had taken up the Team Director's assignment as a challenge and a responsibility and he wants the team to maintain consistency over the next nine months.
"Every assignment for me has been a big one, in the last year. You take it one series at a time, there is no small series in world cricket today, it's just that the teams change.

The work ethics, what you put into place to win a game, all that has to be done in the same way as you do with any other team. So, nothing changes.

"I take it as a challenge. It is a responsibility, it is a challenge which I have never backed away from in anything I have done in life. So, this is no exception. It is a brilliant young team. You have seen the performances over the last year, I don't have to say, you can judge in all formats of the game.

And the endeavour will be to keep that consistency going over the next eight-nine months till we are in charge," Shastri said.

The Team Director also said that bench strength of the senior side was very good with the players in the India A team doing well.

"It (bench strength) is very good. I am going to have a chat with Rahul Dravid (India A coach)) sometime today to find out because he is in the best position to know who are the guys who can come through the ranks.

The fact that the amount of cricket Rahul has played, he would know quickly know who would be the bloke who could bridge the gap and make the grade (to senior India side)," he said.
