Maximum subscriber growth from Category C circles not translating into revenues

With maximum growth being recorded by the circles of Jammu & Kashmir, Bihar, and Assam, category `C’ are recording the maximum subscriber growth. However, this subscriber growth is not translating into revenue growth
Jammu & Kashmir recorded a subscriber growth of 16% with the number of subscribers increasing from 8.25 million at the end of June 2014 to 9.6 million at the end of June 2015, as per data released by Telecom Regulatory Authority of India. J&K circle is closely followed by Bihar where the subscriber base grew from 63.16 million at the end of June 2014 to 72.6 million at the end of June 2015. Bihar recorded a subscriber growth of 15% if one compares the total number of subscribers in June 2014 with subscriber number in June 2015.
On the other hand, Assam, which is also a category `C’ circle recorded a growth of 13% with subscribers increasing from 15.5 million at the end of June 2014 to 17.5 million at the end of June 2015.
TT-1234
However these three circles continue to record one of the lowest revenues for telcos. J&K recorded revenue of Rs 518.7 crore in AMJ 2015 while Bihar recorded revenue of Rs 2558.8 crore in the same time period. On the other hand, Assam recorded revenue of Rs 839 crore in AMJ 2015.

Jammu & Kashmir has a teledensity of 76.9% while Bihar and Assam have teledensity of 51.1% and 53.9% respectively, underlining a need of network expansion and addition of further subscribers from these circles.
Experts have been saying for long that the next wave of subscriber growth is going to come from the rural segment. The top three circles recording maximum revenue growth are predominantly rural. Telcos have largely ignored the country’s hinterland because Average Revenue Per User (ARPU) continues to remain low. The investment in rural expansion usually translates to long gestation period before a telecom operator is able to generate revenue or break even.
However it is a chicken and egg situation. Unless and until they expand more users will not come on board and revenue from existing subscribers is unlikely to increase if products specifically targeted at them are launched.

With 84.75 million (at the end of June 2015) subscribers, UP (E) has the largest subscriber base in India. UP (E) circle is closely followed by Tamil Nadu (79.96 million subscribers-June 2015) and Maharashtra (76.89 million, June 2015).

LinkedIn Rival Viadeo Exits China

Viadeo, the French rival to LinkedIn, is to exit China in order to focus on becoming a profitable business. In a further cost-cutting move, it will also shutter its data center in California and migrate to the cloud.
The company moved into China eight years when it acquired local professional social network Tianji.com, but that site will cease to exist once it is closed down on December 31. Viadeo claims that Tianji has 25 million users, but it has struggled to attract the “very considerable development resources” necessary to drive it forward in “China’s fiercely competitive market”. Viadeo had planned to use one-third of the proceeds from its 2014 IPO to develop Tianji.com, but the listing didn’t raise enough capital and the firm wasn’t able to pull in money from private investors.

“In the first half of 2015 the company went looking for an investor, buyer or local partner, who could guarantee stability and commitment to support it in this market,” Viadeo said in a statement. “However, China’s changing economic conditions marked by a historical slowdown in growth, a major financial crisis in the summer of 2015 and repeated devaluations of the nation’s currency dashed hopes of identifying such a partner.”
Post-China, Viadeo said it will refocus on its home market of France and other French-speaking countries, while putting great emphasis on its B2B sales model.
Viadeo’s foray into China was a fascinating one, since it doubled down on the country in 2011, a time when Twitter and Facebook were heavily linked with opening local operations there. The company two-sided play — having a global site (Viadeo.com) and a China-only one (Tianji.com) — was a model that both of the U.S. social networks had reportedly shown interest in.
In contrast to Viadeo’s troubles in China, LinkedIn seems to be finding some success there. The U.S. social network opened a joint-venture with Sequoia China last year. LinkedIn China isn’t a totally separate site, but it does block some content from Chinabased on the country’s web censorship regulations.

The 10 Chrome extensions you need most

On its own, Chrome is a pretty fantastic browser, but extensions increase its potential exponentially.
So, what are extensions, exactly? Essentially, they're small programs that add extra functionality to your web browser. For Chrome, there are thousands of available extensions which perform a huge variety of functions — everything from extensions that automatically find shopping coupons, to extensions that make your computer run faster. A visit to the Chrome Web Store Extensions page can be overwhelming, so we're going to simplify things for you.

For Chrome newbies, consider this your extensions starter pack. If you're a Chrome power user, you'll no doubt be familiar with some of these, but you might learn about some you've never heard of before. Once you try any one of these extensions, you won't know how you lived without them.

1. The Great Suspender

Screen Shot 2015-12-07 at 4.04.20 PM

If you install but one extension on this list, make it The Great Suspender. As great as Chrome is, it's a bit of a memory hog, which contributes to slower performance and poor battery life for laptop users. This magical extension pauses unused tabs after a user-specified amount of time, saving precious RAM.
If you have a computer with, say, 4GB of RAM or less, this extension will change — and by "change" we mean "speed up" — your life.

2. LastPass

Screen Shot 2015-12-07 at 5.12.30 PM copy

The problem with passwords is that you have too many of them. For that reason, you probably make them all the same or similar, which is easier to remember, but less secure. LastPasssolves both of these problems. It generates and remembers nearly impossible-to-crack passwords for each site that requires a login, all managed through one master password you choose.
LastPass had a security vulnerability earlier this summer (user passwords are encrypted, though, so those were safe), but until a truly more secure method of authentication is determined (think biometrics), it's still the best solution.

3. Giphy

Screen Shot 2015-12-07 at 4.09.19 PM

Like emoji, GIFs have become an essential part of the Internet zeitgeist, but it can be a pain to find the exact one to impress all your friends with your vast internet skills. Giphy makes that a lot simpler by integrating a simple Gif search tool right in your browser.

4. Feedly

Screen Shot 2015-12-07 at 5.15.05 PM

With the death of Google Reader in 2013, Feedly quickly rose to take up Reader's mantle. For news junkies and those who need to keep up with a particular subject area, Feedly is essential. It compiles all your favorite sources into categorized feeds and a small icon at the bottom right of each page lets you add a feed to Feedly. It's RSS, but better.

5. Grammarly

Screen Shot 2015-12-07 at 5.20.06 PM

Grammarly is spell check, but better. It offers contextual spell check and grammar advice, so if you're the sort to get your "its" and "it's" mixed up (definitely not this reporter nope no way), this extension will save you scores of embarrassment. If you're willing to shell out for a premium Grammarly membership, the extension will even suggest better vocab and check for plagiarism.

6. UBlock Origin

Screen Shot 2015-12-07 at 4.17.30 PM

Sometimes you just need to turn down the noise. UBlock Origin isn't the most popular ad blocking extension, but it doesn't require much memory to run and lets users specify which sites they want ads blocked on and which they don't. The big power button icon you see when you click on the extension stops ad blocking on the site you're viewing, but automatically turns it back on when you go to a different site.

7. HTTPS Everywhere

Screen Shot 2015-12-07 at 5.26.46 PM

For those who value security — and if you don't, you should — HTTPS Everywhere is a must-install. This Extension, created by the Electronic Frontier Foundation, switches every HTTP website to load over a more secure HTTPS connection.

8. Honey

Screen Shot 2015-12-07 at 4.43.39 PM

Do you ever get the sinking suspicion you're not getting the best deals shopping online?Honey fixes that. When you go to check out at an online shop, it automatically searches for coupon codes and applies them, saving you precious cash.

9. Save to Pocket

Screen Shot 2015-12-07 at 4.11.29 PM

This is one of many "save for later" services, but Pocket is one of the most popular and highly recommended of them all. If you see a great article you won't have time to read when you find it, a click on the Pocket icon saves it for later. It's cross-platform, and you can even tag things you save, which is excellent for the hyper-organized.

10. Milennials to Snake People

Screen Shot 2015-12-07 at 4.05.43 PM

Because it's not all about "productivity" — aren't you tired of the seemingly endless stream of baseless hot takes about millennials? Millenials to Snake People is the extension you need and deserve. As the title suggests, this extension changes any usage of "millennials" into "snake people." But wait! There's more: it also changes "millennial generation" to "snake person generation," "Generation Y" to "Serpent Society" and "digital natives" into "Parseltounges."

China Is Making Domain Name History

Short domains have always been valuable, but if you’re a company today and want to own a short domain name, your price just became a lot higher. And I mean a lot.
There is a market unfolding that very few know about, and tens of millions of dollars are trading hands monthly. Over the last two years, China has become the largest buyer of domain names, resulting in what is likely the biggest story in domain-name investing since the Internet began.
Chinese investors (and other domain prospectors) have been buying up numeric and short-character dot coms faster than Adele can say “Hello.”
George Kirikos, a well-known follower of ICANN policy, tweeted on November 14th: “136 of the 676 2-letter .com domain names are now owned by Chinese registrants, breaking the 20% barrier (20.1% to be exact).”
The same week, TheDomains.com published an article noting Verisign just reported that 3.2 million new dot-com domains were registered in the previous three weeks — more than the entire second quarter.

What was once a market where domain name owners would hold and wait for a company to approach them is now quickly becoming a market with mass liquidity — the missing piece of the puzzle for the last decade.

Three-letter dot coms consisting of traditionally lower-quality letters often sold in the $10,000 to $15,000 range. Now they are catching upwards of $50,000, and more.
Western investors are still trying to catch up and understand the Chinese market. Letters of lower use in English — q, z and j for example — are considered premium in China. Vowels, on the other hand, are not premium. Any domain name with a vowel or a v is considered less valuable.
Ron Jackson, the publisher behind DNJournal, regularly reports sales like Give.com, Amber.com and Classic.com. However, the sales reports today are now almost nothing but short domains. In fact, 9 of the Top 10 year-to-date sales (all over $500,000) are less than three characters.
Even the preferred way to communicate with buyers has changed. Most transactions are agreed upon in China through QQ — the largest instant messaging system in China, but rarely known in North America. Tracy Fogarty of eNaming explains; “Most offers are sent through QQ. Maybe 1 in 10 people use email, even fewer use the phone.”
This explosion has made a lot of people extremely wealthy, but it’s not who you may think. Many industry veterans missed the boat — trying to understand how to analyze what’s attractive to Chinese buyers; others doubt the long-term value of this market, and many are doubling down for what they see ahead. All of the elements for a Hollywood story are happening right now.
One great site that tracks market activity is Chaomi.cc, showing sales history in charts (much like forex, gold or other commodities). As Hong Kong domain-name investor Franky Tong explained, “chao mi literally means fried rice, but also means domain speculation. This shows how Western investors may have their hands full analyzing data.
Over the last year, some incredible new milestones in domain-name registrations have been achieved.
  • All five-number dot coms are now registered.
  • All five-number dot nets are now registered.
  • All six-number dot coms are now registered.
  • All seven-number dot coms beginning with three eights, ending with three eights or having almost any repeatable pattern are now registered.
  • All four-letter .orgs with premium Chinese letters are now registered.
Even with eight-number dot-com domains, of which there are one hundred million, it’s getting hard to find any of the popular patterns that don’t include a zero or four.

Is This A Fad Or History In The Making?

China is a vastly different culture than America, especially when it comes to wealth. Chinese citizens are raised learning strictly about the importance of savings and building wealth versus our consumer-based society.
Wealthy people love to invest and Chinese investors are hungry for portable wealth. The rise of Bitcoin was something quickly linked to China markets, but it couldn’t hold once Chinese regulators put a stop to the acceptance of deposits in Chinese Yuan. Bitcoin also has (and still has) liquidity issues for many owners outside of North America.
Domain names are different. First, the rarity of domain names is perfect and measurable since there are only so many two-letter dot coms, only so many three-letter dot coms, so many four-numbers with an 8, etc.
In fact, what seems like millions of domain names can easily be broken down into premium domain names that have a far lower supply than Bitcoin ever did.

This new demand for domain names is not an easy thing to understand, but some of those who do have acquired almost generational wealth over the past year. Others have made hundreds of thousands.
Short domain names are commodities now. Fads come and go, and this certainly does not seem like a fad in my opinion. Will there be ups and downs? Sure. But we are likely witnessing history in the making — a new history for an established marketplace that never saw this coming.
Maybe you should have ponied up and paid for that domain name after all.

Sundar Pichai Says Mumbai Central to Get Free Wi-Fi by January; 100 Stations by 2016-End

At the Google for India event in New Delhi on Wednesday, Google CEO Sundar Pichai talked about the company's plans for supporting the Digital India initiative. Among the announcements, one of the highlights was the confirmation that Google will be working with Indian Railways to bring free Wi-Fi to 400 train stations. This had already been announced, but the specific deadlines had not been given. Today, Pichai said that 100 stations will get Wi-Fi by the end of 2016, which 10 million people will use every day. The project will first go live in Mumbai Central in January 2016, he added.
Google is tying up with PSU RailTel to implement the Wi-Fi facilities on stations, using RailTel's fibre optic network backbone that connects the stations themselves.

Aside from this, Pichai also announced that Google is exploring ways to bring Project Loon to India. The idea behind the program is to beam an Internet signal via hot air balloons. It's worth pointing out that the Telecom Minister raised concerns about the idea - in a written response to the Rajya Sabha, Ravi Shankar Prasad wrote, "The proposed frequency band to be used in the Loon Project of Google is being used for cellular operations in India and it will lead to interference with cellular transmissions."
The Google CEO also mentioned a partnership with the Tata Trust - the two are rolling out bicycles to 1,000 villages across three states, to teach women about the Internet. The bicycles will be equipped with Internet connected devices, and the people riding them will be trained by Google to educate women about how they can benefit from the Internet.
Pichai, who was born in India, has earlier blogged about how he believes the Internet can impact India, and says that despite the huge growth that has taken place in terms of the reach of the Internet, there are still a billion people who are completely offline, and this must be addressed. The railways Wi-Fi program will bring many of these people online, Pichai believes, and on the blog, he has also promised that the connections will be fast - "many times faster than what most people in India have access to today" - so it can be used for anything from downloading a book or a game for your journey, watching a video, or researching your destination.

Why Are Long Tail Keywords Important for SEO?

Many websites are usually thrown up in haste by their owners, without much consideration given to correctly optimising their content. They do some quick research into what keywords they should target based upon the product they wish to sell or niche they want to write about.
More times than not, the resultant keywords they decide to use are what we call short tail keywords e.g. Nike shoes, coffee machines, baby strollers etc.
These key phrases get millions of searches each month and to a novice, light up dollar signs in their eyes.
The problem with this, is, that the keyword phrases they have decided upon are not really buyer keywords but more generic and really not that great for optimisation of their content. Also they would be competing against big corporations who have been around for decades and have a great big advertising budget.
You might think that the more searches conducted for a keyword phrase will drive more traffic to your website or blog.

This can not be further from the TRUTH... !
However, in this article I will explain why this is not so and why you should be using long tail keywords for SEO (search engine optimisation).
  • Long tail keywords
Long tail keywords are keyword phrases that have a 'tail' contributed to the organic keywords entered in an online search which your site visitors make use of (or ask inquiries) when searching the internet whether they are simply looking for info or to acquire your particular service or product.
Short tail key phrases are generally no more than 1 or 2 words. Long-tail key words are generally a lot longer, but far more importantly, they're likewise a lot more specific.
  • So! What is a Long-tail Keyword?
As mentioned above these keywords are expressions hooked up to your main topic. Long tail keywords have a lot less competition as people rule them out due to not enough individuals doing a search for that particular set of words. They are a lot simpler to target and constantly produce more buyer friendly web website traffic.
Unlike conventional key words (coffee machines or Nike trainers), long-tail key word expressions are usually 3 words or more and usually no more than 5. They are a direct connection to a keyword phrase that an individual would type into a search engine (Google, Bing or Yahoo) which will aid in narrowing down their search. These keyword phrases are what you should concentrate on and use when optimising your site's content.
By using Long-tail key words, you will drastically increase the likelihood of your potential customer being a buyer. This is compared to using short-tail keywords which will create more search results but not necessarily produce buyers.
  • Long tail keywords examples
Try typing "coffee machines" into a search engine, it will return about 16 million sites, but if you type "isomac coffee machines Australia", only 18 thousand sites are returned. 18 thousand search results are still a bit too high. Other experts may go as far to say that the returning search results of 18 thousand is OK. It does go to show that by using more specific keywords, you can cut the competition and improve your chances.
My personal recommendation and preference is to look for search results in the region of three hundred to eight thousand. Now this may not always be the case. If you are looking at local searches then these figures would become irrelevant and you could be looking at just a few hundred searches.
As a rule of thumb, when deciding to using local searches anything below 50 searches a month is not worth going after.
It is less complicated to get a first page ranking as well as obtaining web traffic with long tail key word phrases, as compared to short tailed, less specific keyword phrases.
  • Other Long tail examples:
• baby wrap carrier Australia
• types of tea without caffeine
• caffeine free tea types
• cheap Nike shoes wholesale free shipping
  • Long tail keywords SEO (search engine optimisation)
Targeting Long Tail phrases is a must for SEO purposes and also to help you get your business or blog indexed faster, as a result of fewer competitors and it's more than likely you get seen by the right audience i.e. customers who are ready to buy from you. You should also use this strategy for your site's content, your blog, your videos, your website design, as well as your off page optimization strategies.
  • Long-tail SEO Strategy
Search Engines are becoming ever more personalised which is why it is very important to focus on long-tail keywords in your SEO campaigns.
  • How To Find Long Tail Keywords For SEO?
There are many different ways of locating long tail keywords. You could possibly use keyword research tools or you can even spy on your competition to come up with unique keywords that no one is using.

Below are some the tools I use to find long tail keywords:
• Google Keyword Tool
• Google Auto Complete Tool
• Using Google Search
• Google Auto-suggest
Finally, when conducting research into which keywords you are going to use, remember that you should be eyeing phases which encompass between 3 to 5 words related to your main topic. They are narrow and buyer specific. And lastly have fewer searches.
I hope this clarifies what long tail keywords are and why they are need for your search engine optimization (SEO).

5 Simple Tips To Get Your Website To The Top Of Google

People are more likely to visit your website if it appears at the top of the Google search results. The procedure of getting your website to rank well on Google, without having to pay Google any money to put you there, is known as search engine optimization (SEO). These organic search results are produced when someone types something into Google that is relative to your website. So how do you get your website to the top of Google? Here are 5 simple tips.
1. Your Keywords
Your keywords are the most important factor to help you get your website to the top of Google. These are the words that someone will type into Google when they are looking for information, products or service related to your online business. There is a high level of competition for basic one word keywords so if you use specific keyword phrases of two words or more you are more likely to get on the front page of Google.

2. Update Your Content On a Regular Basis
When someone types a word or phrase into Google, it will search its index and provide results with the most relevant web pages listed first. Google wants to deliver its users with the latest information. If your website content has not been kept up to date for months, it may be regarded as no longer relevant.
3. Use Keyword Descriptions On Your Images
Despite the fact that Google can't 'read' images, it can read the descriptions that you give the pictures, images and photographs on your website. An 'alt image tag' are the words that your website visitor sees when they move their cursor over an image on your website. Google can also read those words so ensure you label your images with your keyword.
4. Links To And From Your Website
The links that go to and from your website to other websites is seen bu Google as a sign of the reputation and value of the content on your website. To get your website to the top of Google you need to have links from quantity websites to your website. Also create links from your website to these reputable websites. Additionally, link to other pages in your website using a keyword as the anchor text. Anchor text are the highlighted words that when clicked, will link to a specific webpage.

5. Publish Content That People Will Find Useful
Even if your website does get to the top of Google, if somebody doesn't click on it, then you really have achieved nothing. Your website has to provide useful information for people to actually be able to read and understand. Ensure your meta deception text encourages people to click on your link. This is the line of text listed below the title of your page when it's listed on Google. Despite the fact that it does not help to get your website on the front page of Google, these words that could make the difference between somebody clicking or not.

Ola, Uber’s Archrival In India, Hires Ex-Infosys CFO

Indian ride-sharing company Ola boosted its efforts to beat Uber this month when it closed its $500 million Series F round, and, fresh off the heels of that news, it has confirmed the hiring of a new CFO.
Rajiv Bansal, a 21-year finance veteran who was formerly CFO at Indian IT giant Infosys, will join Ola in January 2016. Mitesh Shah, Ola’s current CFO, will make way by moving to a new role in charge of “strategic finance initiatives.”
Ola declined an interview with TechCrunch in relation to this appointment, and the company offered no comment when we asked whether we can interpret Bansal’s arrival as an indicator of its plans to go public.

Despite billions upon billions of investor cash flowing into taxi-app companies, there’s been no listing from a major industry player, though there is plenty of speculationaround when Uber will go public. That said, Didi Kuaidi — Uber’s main rival in China, which invested in Ola via that recent Series F — could go public in the U.S. in the coming two or three years, according to comments made from VP Stephen Zhu our TechCrunch Beijing event earlier this month.
So it’s unclear whether Ola’s new CFO is preparing to get the company’s house in order for a potential listing or a full-on acquisition — Didi Kuaidi also invested in Uber rivals Lyft and GrabTaxi in Southeast Asia, in a sign of its global ambitions — or whether Ola has reached the size at which greater financial diligence is simply a necessary part of business. (The company is currently valued at $5 billion, but heavy discounts and promotions to draw in users are likely to be contributing to a high burn rate.)
The only statement Ola provided was a fairly standard welcoming comment from CEO and co-founder Bhavish Aggarwal:
We are thrilled to welcome Rajiv onboard.. his experience of being at the helm of finance for one of India’s most respected companies will help us in adopting best practices and in realising our mission of building mobility for a billion people.

Note: The original version of this story has been updated to correct that this is not Ola’s first CFO.
