Can Virat Kohli break Sachin Tendulkar's record of maximum ODI centuries?

Despite having witnessed a slight slump in form of late, Virat Kohli was back to his best in the fourth ODI against South Africa as he slammed his 23rd ODI ton.

In the list of batsmen who have scored maximum number of ODI centuries, Kohli lies at the fifth position behind Sachin Tendulkar (49), Ricky Ponting (30), Sanath Jayasuriya (28) and Kumar Sangakkara (25).
Can Virat Kohli break Sachin Tendulkar's record of maximum ODI centuries?

As Kohli continues his good run, the burning question once again is – whether he can surpass Tendulkar's record of maximum ODI centuries? As we can see, there is a huge difference between Tendulkar and Ponting, a difference of 19 ODI centuries.
Not to forget, Kohli has played just 165 ODIs compared to Tendulkar who represented India in 463 ODIs. Also, Kohli is just 26-year-old and can easily play for the next six to eight years, at least.
Hashim Amla too, has a terrific record when it comes to scoring centuries, as the South African veteran has so far scored 21 centuries from just 122 ODIs. But Amla is six years older to Kohli and it remains to be seen how long he can maitain the fitness levels required to survive in modern day cricket.
Kohli has often hailed Tendulkar as the role model who inspired him to take up cricket and it would be a challenge for him to surpass the legend's historic record.
Having said that, looking at his incredible fitness and insatiable hunger to score runs, if there is a cricketer who looks to breakTendulkar's record in the years to come, it is Virat Kohli.

An entire town is throwing an early 2016 Christmas for a terminally ill 7-year-old

Christmas is coming early this year for 7-year-old Evan Wellwood of St. George, Ontario.
There was a chance that Wellwood, who has been battling brain cancer for the past five years, might not make it to the winter holidays, his doctor told his family. His brain tumor had grown.
Evan's Early Christmas 4
So Evan's mom, Shelly Wellwood, decided to initiate an early celebration with her family on Oct. 24. But some of the family had an even bigger idea.

They took early Christmas to a new level with diligent flyering, a Facebook event and acrowdfunding campaign. As of Thursday afternoon, the "Early Christmas in St. George" Facebook page had 3,100 attendees; the GoFundMe campaign had raised close to $14,000.
On Saturday, Evan will be treated with a special dinner and a parade; homes and stores across St. George are decking out their properties with the spirit of Christmas for the 7-year-old.

Evan's Early Christmas

"There are no words to describe it," Shelly told CBC Radio's Metro Morning. "Evan has always had a lot of people supporting him and praying for him, but now that whole family behind [him] is just growing...

People are reaching out that don't live in St. George, it's just truly amazing. At the end of the day, it's all these people, their messages, the hope I'm getting from it — that's honestly what is keeping me going."

So sing a Christmas carol in Evan's honor on Saturday, even if you can't attend.

Intex Aqua Trend Review

Intex has launched its second 4G enabled device Intex Aqua Trend in the market. The device is priced between Rs 9,400-9,700.
In the box:
Apart from the device and its battery, Intex packs screen guard, phone cover, charging cable & plug, & ear-phones.
IMG_20151018_234652

Overall looks:
The Aqua Trend has some solid looks when you check out the device from the front. However, the device feels very plastic-y in hands when you hold it thanks to its back cover. While you do get used to it in couple of hours of usage, the patterned plastic back cover does not really feel rich.

IMG_20151018_220240IMG_20151018_220304
Display and screen:
The device comes with 5 inch IPS display with a resolution of 720*1280 pixels. While the device display lacks in clarity, it makes it up in brightness. The screen, honestly, is just average. However, I am also using Huawei Honor 4X as my second device since last couple of days, the Aqua Trend offers much better display outdoors, thanks to its brightness level.
IMG_20151018_220328
Camera:
Aqua Trend sports a 13 Megapixel rear end camera with LED flash and a 5 Megapixel front-facing camera. The device manages to take decent pictures from its camera on the rear end. However, do not bother zooming in the picture, the camera lacks clarity. The 5 Megapixel front facing camera is definitely a surprise when you compare it with what other handsets in the similar range have to offer. If you’re a selfie person and want to go a device in this go for Intex Aqua Trend.
Intex Aqua Trend_20150917_125225
Battery:
While it is equipped with 3000mAh battery, the battery life is not that good. With exhaustive usage on (3G connection) of apps like Twitter, Facebook (which is battery hogger) the battery lasted for 10-10:30 hours and with media usage even less. For a device with 3000mAh battery, you expect the device to last at least for 12 hours with decent apps & calls usage. Aqua Trent was a downer in this respect.
That said, the device also takes a lot longer to charge.
Call quality:
Call quality is just average. However I faced issues whenever I had to make VOIP calls. The volume on VOIP calls is so low that it’s almost impossible to have a decent conversation.
The device also significantly heats up during the calls.
Customization:
It comes with Android 5.1 Lollipop with little to no customizations by Intex. The only customizations were in notification bar and app icons.
It, however, comes with tons of pre-installed apps such as Auto Call Record, BLE Manager, Intex Services, Intex Play, Myntra, Newshunt, MX Player, Quikr, Skype, Newshunt, among others. Some of these apps can be uninstalled to make space.
Performance:
Aqua Trent is equipped with a 1.3GHz quad-core MediaTek (MT6735) processor with 2GB of RAM and 16GB inbuilt storage. It provides support for MicroSD card up to 32GB.
Most games rendered fairly well on the device, however there’s a slight lag when you play heavy games such as Amazing Spiderman 2. Videos played well as well on the device.
The device only slightly heats up when you continuously watch videos for over 2-3 hours.

Other features:
Intex Aqua Trend is packed with Accelerometer, proximity sensor, HotKnot (which can be used to transfer files between devices with similar tech by just touching their displays), Smart Wake, among others. There are few basic things that are missing such LED notification or backlit capacity touch buttons.
While Intex has managed to launch a decent device, I wouldn’t recommend the device at its current price. If Intex drops the price by Rs 2000-2500 the device could give tough competition to other smartphones in that range.

Alien Engineering Around Strange Star?

There's a new big dipper in the nighttime sky.
No, it's not a cozy constellation, but a distant, non-descript star that behaves like a shipboard semaphore, beaming flashes of light into the cosmic darkness that seem random, but may not be.
While the luminous output from everyday stars is relentlessly steady, this one occasionally dips its brightness as much as 20 percent, suggesting either that it is orbited by lumps of dust, rock or other opaque material, or - and hang onto your desk chair - there are residents in this stellar system who have deliberately built hardware of a size and extent big enough to intercept a substantial amount of their sun's output. In that case, what we're seeing is the consequence of a massive, alien construction project.

Seriously? Could this star, lovingly named KIC 846 2852 - a fairly ordinary stellar orb roughly half-again as big as our Sun and nearly five times brighter - be home to some advanced society that's solving its energy crisis by constructing what's called a Dyson sphere (or more practically, a Dyson swarm): a phalanx of solar panels that orbit their sun, turn oodles of starlight into electricity, and then beam that energy back to the home planet to power their fossil fuel-free lifestyle?

Well, that's certainly a possibility. The idea of Dyson swarms (first proposed by physicist Freeman Dyson) is appealing enough to have tempted several astronomers to look for them throughout the Galaxy. They've done so by searching for the warm glow of infrared light that would waft off the back side of the solar panels. Their task is tricky however, because any dust floating in the space between the planets (and there's always dust!) would mimic this infrared glow.

But KIC 846 2852 is different, because the evidence suggesting astroengineering is direct - there's a clear-cut and periodic dimming of the starlight - a much more straightforward observation than trying to tease out a foggy bit of infrared light.

Given this intriguing behavior, shouldn't we be checking out this star more carefully? Isn't it possible that this is a home to true cosmic intelligence - not just pond scum in the watery recesses of a nearby world, but technically adept beings who might have something interesting to tell us ... or at least spark endless conversation by becoming the first sentience discovered other than our own?

Of course. But history gently prods us to temper our enthusiasm by noting that the explanation for KIC 846 2852's inconstant glare might be prosaic, rather than profound. This star is one of the 150,000 stellar targets examined by NASA's Kepler space telescope. It was also one that was vetted in a citizen science campaign that used human eyeballs (as opposed to computer code) to hunt for unusual features. And indeed, what the humans found would likely have escaped notice by the software. The changes in brightness were highly variable and substantial, much as you might expect from a small swarm of moths attacking a street lamp.

The scientists who wrote the paper announcing this behavior gave their own take on what's going on here - their own explanations for what these "moths" might be. Clumps of dust are a possibility, as is natural variability of the star itself, or even errors in the data processing.
But none of these seem to cut the mustard. The discoverers prefer another explanation: A small star, now visible about 100 billion miles away from KIC 846 2852, recently made a closer pass, and disturbed some outer solar system comets. Much as lifting a rock sends sow bugs scurrying, the gravitational tug of this star could have prodded otherwise inoffensive comets to careen towards the inner regions of the KIC 846 2852 star system, filling it with debris that's causing the blinking.

That would be interesting, but obviously less exciting than finding a Dyson swarm. Still we must beware: Given our natural inclination to blame aliens for just about all unexplained phenomena on Earth, it's inevitable we'll give them credit even when they're not involved. Pulsars, when first discovered, were dubbed "Little Green Men" by Cambridge astronomers. They turned out to be dead stars. CTA 102 - a quasar discovered in the early 1960s, was seen to change its brightness very quickly, and at least a few Soviet astronomers figured that clever extraterrestrials were sending coded messages to whoever was paying attention. In fact, it turns out that quasars just naturally blink and for reasons that have nothing to do with intelligence.

In addition, KIC 846 2852 is hardly a star system anyone would finger as "most likely to house aliens." A few thousand degrees hotter than the Sun, this star would bleach the surface of any encircling planet with highly unfriendly ultraviolet light. In addition, it will take only 3 billion years for it to totally exhaust its natal supply of hydrogen fuel. It will die young. Keep in mind that it took 4-1/2 billion years for life on Earth to reach our own, modest technological level.

These are not show-stoppers: Maybe other planets can produce clever critters a lot faster than Earth did, and maybe the inhabitants are born with a number 50 sunblock epidermis.
And more generally, one shouldn't let healthy skepticism degrade into unattractive pig-headedness, even if in this case the evidence for something revolutionary isn't terribly promising. You have to follow up. And we are.

Since October 16, the SETI institute has been using its Allen Telescope Array to observe KIC 846 2852 over a wide range of radio frequencies (1 to 10 GHz), looking for any artificial signals. Keep in mind that this star system is relatively far, roughly 1400 light-years away. That's more distant than the Orion Nebula, and getting there (if you feel the need) would require a 23 million year ride in our fastest rocket. But more to the point, any signals detectable here on Earth would have to be exceptionally powerful.

We're continuing to analyze the data. In another week, our SETI team will once again observe KIC 846 2852 using some new receivers being affixed to the Allen Array - known as Antonio feeds - that will increase the sensitivity by a factor of two. Check this space.
Meanwhile, consider KIC 846 2852 as something suggestive of cosmic company, but no more than a suggestion.

Hotness Alert: Aditi Rao Hydari Goes Topless For A Magazine Cover

Aditi Rao Hydari is known for her bold avatars in movies and recently she did a very hot and sensuous photo shoot for G.Q Magazine.
She again went ahead to raise temperatures with her topless photo shoot for one of the online magazines.Every body would agree that even though she poses semi nude  for photo shoots but they are shot always in a classiest way.
Such photographs are easy to be viewed as risque but one should shoot them by keep intact the aesthetic sense so that it becomes very appealing in nature and not raunchy.
For this particular photo shoot she wore nothing but ornate Lehanga and statement jewelry. The Lehengas were designed by ace fashion designer Rahul Mishra and the jewelry were by Sangeeta Boochra.

She was styled  by Nikhil Thampi and Mohit Rai. And the makeup and hair were done by Elton Fernandez for this bewitching photoshoot for Pernia’s pop up show magazine.
She was last seen in Guddu Rangeela and now her next movie is Wazir which is one of the most anticipated movies.
Below is the topless photograph which is elegantly and gracefully shot by ace photographer Errikos Andreou.

AirConsole Is A Browser-Based Gaming Platform Where Your Smartphone Is The Controller

Gamers with a penchant for old school gaming have another platform to add to their entertainment mix: AirConsole is a recently launched browser-based games platform that repurposes players’ smartphones as controllers.
There’s no need to download any games or apps — or indeed, hunt out your Nintendo 64 and remember where you left the controllers… For a local multiplayer gaming session AirConsole is super simple to use — you just go to AirConsole.com on your computer and smartphone, entering the link code that’s shown on the bigger screen on your smaller screen — et voila, your phone becomes the touch pad to control the goings-on on the other screen. Neat.
The number of games is pretty limited at this nascent stage, but the team behind AirConsole is currently running a competition for devs to port titles (they say any browser-based game or Unity3d game can be ported).
In the meanwhile titles include TicTac Boom, Hit Parade and PolyRacer. There’s also an NES emulator, plus card games such as poker and Cards Against Humanity.
AirConsole

Of course AirConsole is not going to entice pro gamers. But it’s not trying to; it’s squarely targeting the casual social gaming crowd. Add to which, it’s cross platform and cross device — so you don’t need specific hardware to get a gaming session up and running.
The platform has been bagging early attention on Reddit — where one of its game developers describes it thus:
…it doesn’t need a lot of hardware: An average laptop will do. You won’t be able to play the newest AAA games with it, but that’s also not really what we’re all about. AirConsole is to play a few quick games with friends while having a beer. Think Mario Party. Except it’s really annoying to carry an N64 with 8 controllers (or a big gaming PC with 8 gamepads) somewhere, while AirConsole just needs a laptop or TV with a couple of smartphones, and you’re all good to play with as many people as you like.
Latency can be a slight issue with the link between computer and smartphone, depending on the device you’re using as a controller (AirConsole claims the experience is better using Android phones than iPhones — noting that devices that support WebRTC having latencies of between 1 and 10 milliseconds, while those without WebRTC support lag between 40 to 120 milliseconds). But given the old school gaming vibe it’s not necessary a big deal to have sporadic delays in gameplay.

N-Dream, the Zurich, Switzerland based startup behind AirConsole, started work on the concept back in January, with just under $1.4 million in initial capital — going on to launch the platform early last month (just before Apple took the wraps off its new Apple TV, which includes a touch-sensitive remote that doubles as a game controller).

Krishna Shroff Breaks The Internet Again By Posting ‘Topless’ Photo

Krishna Shroff, veteran actor Jackie Shroff’s daughter, is already creating waves over internet for some reason or the other. It’s look like Krishna too is following her brother’s footsteps.
She is basking in limelight again as she shared another topless picture on one of social media sites which was meant to garner her share of attention.
Few days back she took social media by storm with her seductive photographs that she posted on her Instagram. Soon after those pictures went viral there were rumors about her Bollywood debut.
It seems like Krishna is slowly paving her to Bollywood.  Also these images are showcasing another fact that she has no qualms in shedding clothes as well. Some Bollywood actresses do hesitate to go for semi nude photo shoots but Krishna went ahead to do such photo shoot way before her Bollywood debut. Are these pictures some kind of cue to the film makers?
But Krishna was quoted saying some other reason. “My friend is a photographer, who is building her portfolio to further her career. The two of us like to have fun with the camera and just shoot whatever is the mood of the moment. And since I like to put up aesthetic pictures for my private Instagram page, it’s a win-win situation for both my friend and me. It’s as simple as that!” she said to one of the online media sites.

Jackie Shroff, Krishna’s father, was quoted saying in one of the dailies recently the following statement. “I don’t like interfering in my kids’ lives. Both Tiger and Krishna are well brought up kids and they understand what to do and how to do. They will be the best to answer about themselves. I don’t like talking about them because I am comfortable with whatever they do.”
Below is the image that was posted by hottie Krishna Shroff.

Will  Krishna give a tough fight to all the Bollywood actresses soon as she has dared to bare and hogged lime light already?

SETI Institute Undertakes Search for Alien Signal from Kepler Star KIC 8462852

“We either caught something shortly after an event like two planets crashing together or alien intelligence,” said Dr. Gerald Harp, senior scientist at the SETI Institute in Mountain View, California, referring to thebaffling light variations seen by the Kepler Observatory in the star KIC 8462852 .
And he and a team from the Institute are working hard at this moment to determine which of the two it is.

Beginning last Friday (Oct. 16), the Institute’s Allen Telescope Array (ATA) was taken off its normal survey schedule and instead focused on KIC 8462852, one of the 150,000-plus stars studied by NASA’s Kepler Mission to detect Earth-sized exoplanets orbiting distant stars.. The array of 42 dishes comprises a fully automated system that can run day and night, alerting staff whenever an unusual or interesting signal has been detected.
A swarm of comets has been proposed to explain the erratic and non-repeating light variations seen in the star located nearly 1,500 light years from Earth in the constellation Cygnus the Swan. But no one really seems satisfied with the explanation, and the chances that we’d catch a huge event like a comet breakup or planetary collision in the short time the star has been under observation seems unlikely. Collisions also generate dust. Warmed by the star, that dust would glow in infrared light, but none beyond what’s expected has been detected.
The Allen Telescope Array (ATA) is a “Large Number of Small Dishes” (LNSD) array designed to be highly effective for simultaneous surveys undertaken for SETI projects (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) at centimeter wavelengths. Credit: Seth Shostak / SETI Institute

The ATA picks up radio frequencies in the microwave range from 1-10 gigahertz. For comparison, your kitchen microwave oven produces microwaves at around 2 gigahertz. Although Harp couldn’t reveal the team’s results yet — that will come soon when a paper is submitted in few weeks in a science journal — he did share the excitement of a the hunt in a phone interview Tuesday.

The Jeep® Grand Cherokee

The Jeep® Grand Cherokee took home two awards at this year’s Active Lifestyle Vehicle (ALV) awards, including the inaugural Phoenix Automotive Press Association (PAPA) Best of the Southwest award. The 12th annual Carspondent.com “Active Lifestyle Vehicle of the Year” awards competition was held at San Marcos Golf Resort in Chandler, Ariz.

Dunes on Pluto?

The New Horizons team has released a few pictures of the surface of Pluto that have fairly regularly-spaced linear features somewhat similar to desert dunes on Earth.
Just a few years ago, nobody would have ever considered calling landforms like these dunes without a great deal more work, but the discovery of vast dune fields on Saturn’s icy moon, Titan, has brought windswept surfaces to the forefront of outer Solar System planetary science. Now when we see similar features on these cold, ice-covered worlds, our first thought is to wonder if they are windblown dunes.
But can the nearly airless world of Pluto really make “wind”? Yes, it can! The atmosphere is just thick enough – or at least it can be at certain times of the Plutonian year – to support strong winds able to blow grains along the ground. My colleague Ryan Ewing of Texas A&M University has proposed that sand grains on Pluto would be about 1 mm in size; a little larger than those typically found on Earth (or Venus, Mars, or Titan, for that matter), and that winds as strong as 140 m/s (that’s 313 miles per hour or 504 kilometers per hour) are needed to be able to move these grains.
It sounds strange to think of Pluto as a windswept world, but then again windblown features have been found on comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko, so why not Pluto too? The images we’ve seen from Hew Horizons show that sediment has flowed on Pluto’s surface, probably as glaciers, and this process could easily create enough fine-grained material to be blown by any wind that’s strong enough.
dunesFigure 1

The large dark linear features in the Baré Montes (Figure 1) were the first to be considered dunes. It’s possible that’s what they are, but it’s tough to say for sure. If they are dunes, then they have formed on rough topography so that we see a mix of the dark, linear dune-like features among other mottled surface features. That makes it hard to pick out any characteristics that would be diagnostic of dunes.  If they are dunes, then they are likely to be lee dunes, forming from winds blowing from the upper right to the lower left. In this case, the wind would carry sediment over the rough terrain and let dark sand pile up on the lee side, forming dunes that would extend downwind. Many dunes like this have been found on bothMars and Earth.
What are they, if not dunes? Good question. They could be wind-eroded features calledyardangs. Or they could be joints: rocks broken into a regular pattern by tectonic stresses. Regular patterns abound in geology; perhaps in time, better imagery will help determine what they are. Equally interesting to me are the much smaller, regularly-spaced bright features on the surrounding plains. Could those be dunes? If so then they’re made of very different materials than the larger, darker features of the Baré Montes.
dunes on plutoFigure 2

A new spectacular image near Pluto’s terminator shows the Tartarus Dorsa, mountains with a distinctive linear texture the New Horizon’s team calls “snakeskin” (Figure 2). Could these be dunes? Maybe, but then again maybe not. On the one hand, there are some aspects of these structures that are similar to windblown dunes: They are regularly-spaced, linear features that are superposed on (i.e., sitting on top of) everything else, just like dunes tend to be. On the left side of this field of tan-colored features are some small bright grayish, arcuate shapes that are reminiscent of barchan dunes. On the other hand, there are some aspects of the “snakeskin” that are unlike windblown dunes: they seem unusually sharp-tipped, and they’re located on high ground (dunes tend to form in valleys).
So again, the question is what are they, if not dunes?  Different conditions on other planets make for different landforms. It could be something we’ve never seen on Earth. Their sharp tops make me wonder if they’re some sort of erosional feature, like sastrugi. As every scientist has said, “we need more and better data to know for sure.”

YouTube Red, Google’s ad-free video service, launching October 28 for $9.99 per month

YouTube has been rumored to launch a subscription-based, advertisement-free video service for some time now, and it’s looking like that’s finally coming into fruition. Google has just announced YouTube Red, a new video service that will offer completely ad-free videos and more for just $9.99 per month.
Not only will the videos be ad-free in YouTube Red, it will also allow users to save videos and songs to their mobile devices for offline viewing, as well as the ability to keep videos playing in the background when using other applications. The $9.99 monthly fee also includes a free subscription to Google Play Music, which is a steal considering the music service normally costs $9.99 per month on its own. Additionally, Google Play Music subscribers will also get a free subscription to YouTube Red.

YouTube Red is launching on Wednesday, October 28th and will include a free 30-day trial for all users. Google says that early next year, YouTube Red subscribers will get member-only access to new, original shows and movies from popular content creators. You can learn more about the member-only channels by following this link.

Be sure to watch the promotional video attached above, and head to the YouTube link below to learn more about the service. There’s a pretty informative FAQ section at the bottom of the page, detailing all of YouTube Red’s features.

iOS 9.1 Update Also Expands Reach Of Apple’s News App

Apple’s iOS 9.1 update, which yesterday brought support for new emoji to users of Cupertino’s mobile devices among other tweaks, also flicked the launch switch on Apple News for users in the U.K. and Australia.
Prior to this the personalized news service was couched as being tested in these regions.
With iOS 9.1 users will now get the News app on their homescreen, which lets them tap through set up to customize reading preferences — by choosing specific publications and also, if they wish, specifying particular topic preferences to power the content that populates the app. The more publications and topics a user chooses, the more granular the preferences Apple’s News app offers.
Apple says U.K. publishers featured from launch include newspapers such as the Times, The Sun, The Telegraph, The Guardian and the FT, the U.K.’s public service broadcaster the BBC, plus U.K. magazine titles from publishers such as Conde Nast and Haymarket. This is in addition to U.S. publisher content.

Apple is not the only phone-maker moving onto editorial territory of course. Last monthSamsung inked a strategic partnership with European publisher Axel Springer to build aggregated news content for European users of its devices. (While a prescient HTC launched a personalized newsfeed on its Android devices back in 2013, via its BlinkFeed homescreen UI.)
One thing to note with Apple News is this feature is (apparently) not related to the newsfeed that automatically appears on the iOS search page when a user swipes right from their primary homescreen.
Spotlight Search newsfeed
This bizarrely random feed of news can’t apparently be customized directly by the user — beyond being automatically configured to their language/country, and presumably reflecting their Siri searches over time. It does not appear to reflect their stated Apple News editorial content preferences (but we’ve reached out to Apple to ask for confirmation of the algorithms in play here — and will update this story with any comment).

Although not immediately obvious, it is possible to disable the search page newsfeed entirely by switching off Spotlight Search on the General > Settings page. However doing this also turns off Siri Suggestions entirely. So it’s something of a sledgehammer-to-crack-a-nut approach. But hey, at least there’s a way to kill the feed if it bugs you.
It does seem a bit of an oddity for Apple to launch two newsfeed options in iOS 9 — each with apparently different personalization mechanisms. Perhaps it’s an experiment to see whether human-specified curation is a better editorial strategy than machine learned guestimates of the type of content someone might like to read.

Under Fire, Haryana Chief Minister Visits Family of Dalit Children Burnt Alive

Under attack from the opposition, Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar today met the family of the two Dalit children who were burnt alive at a village near Delhi on Monday and assured them that the guilty would be punished at the earliest. But soon after he left, angry locals held a protest march and raised slogans against him.

Mr Khattar was expected to meet the family yesterday, but his visit was cancelled after protests by angry locals. When asked why he was visiting the village three days after the deaths, he said his ministers were keeping a watch on the situation. "My eyes are on this case every minute. My ministers have been here from day one on my behalf."

When Congress Vice-President Rahul Gandhi visited Sonped village in Faridabad district yesterday, he attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi, his party the BJP which rules the state and chief minister Mr Khattar and blamed their "attitude" for such tragedies.

Congress Vice-President Rahul Gandhi met the family of the two Dalit Children in Sonped yesterday.
"This is an attitude shared by the Prime Minister, the Chief Minister, the BJP and the RSS - if somebody is weak, they can be crushed. This government is not for the poor," he had said.

The children-- two-and-a-half year old Vaibhav and 11-month-old Divya - died after their house was set on fire, allegedly by members of an upper caste community.

Their mother Rekha has suffered 70 per cent burns, their father also sustained injuries.

Vaibhav and Divya were sleeping in their house when it was set on fire, allegedly by members of an upper caste community.
Seven accused have been arrested for the death of the children. Four more are yet to be traced. Mr Khattar's government yesterday ordered a Central Bureau of Investigation or CBI probe into the deaths.

The family of the children has alleged that the attack was the fallout of a long-standing feud with a group of upper caste people in the village. But the kin of the accused have denied the allegation.

Angry locals blocked a highway near the national capital yesterday and said they would not cremate the children till all those accused in the case were arrested. They also held a march carrying the bodies of the children.

Later in the day, the protest was called off after the police managed to convince the family to cremate the children. Their last rites were performed late in the evening.

Japan Offers India Soft Loan for $15 Billion Bullet Train in Edge Over China

Japan has offered to finance India's first bullet train, estimated to cost nearly Rs 1 lakh crore ($15 billion), at an interest rate of less than 1 per cent, officials said, stealing a march on China, which is bidding for other projects on the world's fourth-largest network.

Tokyo was picked to assess the feasibility of building the 505-kilometre corridor linking Mumbai with Ahmedabad, the commercial capital of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's home state, and concluded it would be technically and financially viable.

The project to build and supply the route will be put out to tender, but offering finance makes Japan the clear frontrunner.

Last month China won the contract to assess the feasibility of a high-speed train between Delhi and Mumbai, a 1,200-km route estimated to cost twice as much. No loan has yet been offered.

Japan's decision to give virtually free finance for PM Modi's pet programme is part of its broader push back against China's involvement in infrastructure development in South Asia over the past several years.

"There are several (players) offering the high-speed technology. But technology and funding together, we only have one offer. That is the Japanese," said A. K. Mital, the chairman of the Indian Railway Board, which manages the network.

The two projects are part of a 'Diamond Qaudrilateral' of high speed trains over 10,000 km of track that India wants to set up connecting Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata.

Japan has offered to meet 80 per cent of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad project cost, on condition that India buys 30 per cent of equipment including the coaches and locomotives from Japanese firms, officials said.

Japan's International Cooperation Agency, which led the feasibility survey, said the journey time between Mumbai and Ahmedabad would be cut to two hours from seven. The route will require 11 new tunnels including one undersea near Mumbai.

"What complicates the process is Japanese linking funding to use of their technology. There must be tech transfer," said Mital.

Rickety Rail

JICA declined to comment on the details of its offer. "The report has already been handed over to India, and the Indian government is now in the process of making a consideration," a spokeswoman said.

Toshihiro Yamakoshi, counsellor in the economic section of the Japanese embassy, said Japanese companies were keen to collaborate with their Indian counterparts on the rail project as part of PM Modi's Make-in-India programme. He said it was too early to provide details of the cooperation.

Tokyo's push in India comes just weeks after it lost out to China on the contract to build Indonesia's first fast-train link.

Beijing offered $5 billion in loans without asking for guarantees, an Indonesian official said, ending a months-long battle to build the line linking Jakarta with the textile hub of Bandung.

Japan's NHK broadcaster quoted Transport Minister Keiichi Ishii as saying that Prime Minister Shinzo Abe had instructed him to step up exports of transport systems to India and Southeast Asia.

"It is very regrettable that a high-speed railway project in Indonesia was awarded to China," he said.

China won the Delhi-Mumbai survey after securing clearance from Indian security agencies long worried about China's involvement in Indian infrastructure.

The two neighbours fought a war in 1962 over a border dispute that remains unresolved, though trade between them is booming.

India's cabinet will take a decision on the Japanese proposal over the next few weeks, an Indian railway official said. He said there were lingering concerns about whether the billions of dollars required for high-speed rail might be more usefully spent in modernising the railway system.

"There is a lot of money involved in this. The different departments are weighing the implications. Should we be committing all our resources to a single high-speed line," the railway official said on condition of anonymity."

"The railways have not attempted anything as big as this before in terms of costs," the official said.

India's rickety state-controlled rail system, which moves 23 million people a day, has a poor safety record and is in desperate need of funds to modernise it.

The average speed of trains is 54km/hour, and rail experts have argued that the priority ought to be to improve the speed and safety on existing trains and routes.
